I just learned that a reply from my account is worth ~$30 in Moxie, which is about 4x the federal minimum wage in the U.S. This explains the prevalence of bots and reply guys lately. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this development. On one hand, it feels harmless to airdrop free money to people simply for engaging. On the other hand, it has a distorting effect on social interactions that makes it hard to know what is genuine. I also feel kind of gross that something called a “Fan Auction” was launched using my likeness without my consent or approval. I’m not sure what the financial implications of that are, but it certainly wasn’t enough for me to say yes since it involves my reputation. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to stop using the app and I’m obviously benefiting from the system, but am deeply conscious of the precedent my behavior will set for others.

I don’t how to feel about your comparison to the minimum wage, that’s truly upsetting but I will say that it’s made my time on here more social. We all get stuck in our comfortable circles, maybe this is a way for more people to get to know each other.

i still don’t understand the excitement, maybe cos it’s full of farmers and we know how that ends. if moxie empowers a social network with financial incentives, we shouldn’t have fan tokens, only channel tokens (protects you from any legal situation and reputation)

It’s a strange dynamic. Even on my smaller stats, I have noticed it. I think once the buzz dies off it will become less of a conscious thing. I do enjoy spreading the love around with recasts and replies even in a smaller way.

Tbh I somehow feel you brother. Everything has a price tag now in farcaster, interactions too. And big accounts like you Can easily be bots target, now more that ever. But I still believe there is a bunch of people that do this with pure intentions: to have interesting conversations or help a friend grow. And for the FT auction situation, it happened to other people I know, like Coop for example, so idk, my best piece of advice is try to make the most out of it, while having some fun💆🏻‍♂️🖤

Feeling is understandable. But I don't see how this is much diff from legacy social media monetizing the content on their platform. They don't ask for your permission to display an ad next to your content either. On FC this is more distributed, since anyone can come up w a system that tries to monetize the social graph

i like warpcast but i am put off by the monetisation of everything. there has to be a better way to foster genuine engagement. i appreciate that art is worth paying for, and earning tokens is fun, but it shouldn't feel like everyone is trying to ride a gravy train

Why let it stop you? Your reply is 2x monthly minimum wage in my country, so choosing to reply someone actually helps them, cause it's a choice to reply or engage someone. There are PROS and CONS, but I believe the PROS outweigh here.

This is a very serious matter. You’re absolutely right about the fan token. Launched without consent is indeed something that needs to be clarified. I’m not sure if there’s financial implications but I suspect that if you quit probably your holders will lose their moxies/money?

I think you could have opted out at the start but I guess then you didn’t know the effects it would have until it’s too late? I even feel the effects writing this reply. I have a valid question but you could easily see my question as me looking for Moxie from your reply? Moxie has put engagement in a weird place.

Hi @phil 1st, my apologies background: Moxie enables "tipping" to automatically happen through organic behaviors - likes, replies, recasts, frames. Tipping "allowance" is determined by Far Score - indication of influence While there's been a surge of replyguys moxiebating, it'll settle. Most people, like yourself, wont change any behaviors. This stuff happens every day on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok where influencers get tons of replyguy replies in hope that they'll engage, giving the replyguy clout. Influencers ignore it, & it forces the platforms to evolve & do better at filtering good replies from baiters. same will happen here wrt your Fan Token. We launched ~400 Fan Tokens initially curated by our team. >90% were explicitly requested. The only exceptions were very large "celebrity" accounts (you have 400k followers), so members could back their favorites and participate in your success. 3 users asked to cancel their FT auction and we did so immediately. Since 1 week it is self-service only

I think the only answer is to try not to think about it and keep operating as normal. But everyone is affected. I'm much more hesitant now to reply to anyone, especially short supportive replies, which I think are a natural reaction from real people to something they like. Constant self-monitoring is exhausting.

I wanted to participate in a fan token auction and applied for it, but it seems that famous individuals are entered into the auction without their consent. Given your status, I'm sure careful consideration is required.
