While exploring gold rush towns, we stayed at one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in California. It was built in 1856 and its brick structure survived a fire that destroyed most of downtown. A meeting here among utility leaders led to the eventual formation of PG&E. Notable guests include Mark Twain and Jack London.
The hotel's current owners saved it from being condemned and took on a three-year renovation. They preserved the historic veranda that looks out onto Broad Street. We enjoyed having a drink there and imagining the gold seekers and outlaws who walked by during the late 1800s.
The downstairs restaurant, Lola, was where we ended the day after a long, dusty hike. The oysters were so refreshing, with a passionfruit mignonette and a crunchy apple pearl. Beef carpaccio was also super. The star was a peach and tomato salad with herbed yogurt and basil oil that I'm still thinking about.
Before we left, we made sure to get the recipe for our favorite cocktail. It has rum, maraschino liqueur, lychee, almond, and black tea. Planning to make a batch of it at home in a couple weeks when some friends who have been camping across the national parks come to visit.
