While exploring gold rush towns, we stayed at one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in California. It was built in 1856 and its brick structure survived a fire that destroyed most of downtown. A meeting here among utility leaders led to the eventual formation of PG&E. Notable guests include Mark Twain and Jack London. The hotel's current owners saved it from being condemned and took on a three-year renovation. They preserved the historic veranda that looks out onto Broad Street. We enjoyed having a drink there and imagining the gold seekers and outlaws who walked by during the late 1800s. The downstairs restaurant, Lola, was where we ended the day after a long, dusty hike. The oysters were so refreshing, with a passionfruit mignonette and a crunchy apple pearl. Beef carpaccio was also super. The star was a peach and tomato salad with herbed yogurt and basil oil that I'm still thinking about. Before we left, we made sure to get the recipe for our favorite cocktail. It has rum, maraschino liqueur, lychee, almond, and black tea. Planning to make a batch of it at home in a couple weeks when some friends who have been camping across the national parks come to visit. 📍 National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City, California

She was absolutely wild. Some highlights of her life (and I’m leaving out a lot). - She had affairs with Franz Liszt and Alexandre Dumas. - King Ludwig I of Bavaria once asked in public if her breasts were real. She took off her clothes to prove they were. She became such an influence on the king and got so deeply involved in politics that Bavarians hated her. She ended up fleeing the country when the king was forced to abdicate (in no small part due to her). - She performed and lived in California, then went to Australia to do the same, where her “erotic spider dance” was considered so depraved it caused a theater to lose money because “respectable families” stopped going. - She attacked a journalist who wrote her a bad review with a whip. - On her return voyage from Australia back to San Francisco, her manager was lost at sea after going overboard.
