I recently had the opportunity to present my research on native bee host interactions at Santa Rosa Junior College’s Advanzando conference with funding from the NSF!! The poster is linked below, but if you love bees (or at least the ecosystem services they provide), here’s the summary ⬇️

3. My teammates and I caught the bees at 8 sites on campus, killed them (to examine them, more on that later), used iNaturalist to survey the floral hosts and survey data, froze them, and then later pinned and identified them.

2. The purpose of this study is to determine which floral hosts (flowers the bees are pollinating or residing on when caught) are the most important to native bees in California, specifically in the North Bay.

1. native bee populations have been in decline because of habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticides, diseases and competition from non-native managed bees.

Nogggaaaaaa!!! Hi!! Yes, we talked about this earlier, and honestly, I’m not sure there’s a right or wrong answer. It’s very nuanced. It would be great if we could put them in hibernation and then rerelease them, but, idk if we know how to do that. It is industry standard or whatever to kill them for now :(

ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING i’m most interested in the moral dilemma of killing the bee, thinking about how these experiments are designed and that moral philosophy of one bee vs saving many not being super direct to a human line of thinking like killing one human (who is someone’s dad, son, etc) to save many…

then again it sounds like it’s the most productive?? idek

I've been working on cultivating habitat for native pollinators on my property this is a very interesting topic to me! Honey bees are overrated and wasps are underrated. Yellow jackets give other bzz bzz a bad name 😤

Yes!! They’ve done some amazing work! One of my favorite graphs from my ecology class I just finished was the theory of island biogeography graph! They measured species diversity before, during, and/or after volcanic eruptions to find larger, closer to mainland islands had higher numbers of species! Crazy!!

Yes dude, they’re so important!! I love studying species important to ecosystems. I’m studying seagrass rn. They provide juvenile fish nurseries, pollution filtration, nutriebt cycling, carbon storage, and so much more :)

Thank you so much! I’m really grateful I met the instructor leading it. I was at an outdoor volunteer day pulling up weeds, and we struck up a conversation, and she said she had space available for an intern to help on her bee research. The rest is history :)

Gotcha, thanks! According to my professor, it is necessary to kill the bees😭 it’s standard practice to do so. Identification can be a very delicate and precise process, and the bees have to be not moving for an extended period of time, especially when they were caught weeks before the expert can examine them

i actually did have one question! 

the discussion states:

how would this be(e) measured? how would bees be measured in one location vs. another?
