Do Japanese people come to America and find that it’s a complete dump? They have a much more modern and functional society. Horrified to think about them riding the New York subway.

More like a retired museum society slowly committing self-extinction. Very Buddhist. Life, growth, and dynamism are just messy and crude.

It should be noted that New York is especially dumpy. That's kind of the whole brand. Everything is over 100 years old and falling apart, and no one remembers how to fix it, and I guess the people who live there have just gotten used to it?

I think one of the ley things for street litter in Japan is the cultural attitude that it is rude to walk and eat.

I visited NYC for the first time after living in Tokyo for a few years, though originally from SoCal. Subway was, well, not Japanese.
