I think the issue is more to do with the low engagement rate / reach when ppl do share interesting content for their community. that and the fact that its much harder to grow on here vs other platforms. (I love fc btw, just some feedback Ive heard a lot)

I have the same experience on most other platforms tho. If I share something I find interesting on X, I get no engagement. Because I haven’t spent time building an audience there. Same with IG, etc. Anywhere you go, you will get poor engagement until you spend time building an audience.

Ah. That sucks. Might be different if all you share is art, i get really good engagement on FB and it was much easier to grow a new account on IG, FB & Twitter for me.

I wish the suggested follows showed accounts I'm truly interested in. I see little to no artists in there rn tho. Not sure what the solution is.

Perhaps it is because art isn't being recognized and valued by the platform? It doesn't show in trending, and it doesn't show as suggested follows for new followers, so we're left relying on each other to find the new artists here? As for building an audience, I've been her since February, posting multiple times daily, and crossposting to various channels (which isn't possible on other platforms), yet my average reactions per cast is (I think) roughly 22. I get that the entire audience on Farcaster is smaller, but that's not a great result when I share an image that got 65k reactions on Facebook, for instance.

On Fc, you have to spend more time building an audience and a network. You can’t just share something and expect good distribution here. You have to spend the time creating an audience.

While I agree its important to invest time to build an audience, its really not helping a new platform onboard new users if the algorithm prevents organic reach / growth & account discovery in the initial years of its launch. Especially for artists who already have to spend an enormous amount of time marketing themselves on 3-4 other platforms. Most people I see having a lot of success on FC spend 4-8 hours day on the app. How are artists supposed to find time to create if 1/3 of their day is dedicated to growing their FC audience? Its never gonna happen they’re just gonna leave and focus on platforms where their content is seen more easily. The amount of time I’ve had to spend on here to grow my account was probably 4-5x more than IG, FB & X. Def a big issue to address as it will keep preventing mass onboarding imo.

So, just for comparison, I jumped into the trending and find a piece of art there: 130 likes, and an account with 380,000 followers… for context, averaging 20-25 engagements with 4000 followers feels much stronger. It’s a question of the number of daily active users, and that requires more people participating. So this platform Is still so early… it’s not about building an audience here, but truly building the number of users actively engaged with this platform.

It's also about building an audience here. I could introduce you to artists with much less followers who get much more engagement than the trending example because they've developed strong relationships and built a good audience. I get that you can get better distribution on other platforms without this step, but I think even if Farcaster had millions of DAU, you would still have to spend time building an audience to do comparably well here.

Im curious, what’s been your experience building on other platforms? Most artists are used to growing audiences this isnt anything new, so im surprised you seem to disagree. thinking maybe you didnt have the same experience with engagement / growing organically on alternative apps in their initial years after launch?

I don’t have experience building on other platforms. But I have discussed this with a lot of people who do. The consensus that we came was that a lot of people try to use the same tactics that work on another platform here; and it doesn’t work. What works on Twitter doesn’t work here, etc. I see a lot of artists here who say things like “I’ve been sharing my art into different channels for months but not getting any traction”. I think that’s because they’re approaching it the same way they would on another platform.

So what would be the way to approach it on here in a sustainable way so that artists can still prioritize creating and building their career in web 2? In my experience being a creative on various social media platforms for over 20 years (since Myspace lol), people tend to leave and never look back if the algorithm doesn't allow them to be seen with a reasonable time investment. If you have answers and recommendations, please do share.

Group chats are key I think. For people to feel any kind of connection with your art, they need to feel a connection with you, at least in my experience. Finding good group chats you can join with like minded individuals (both artists and not) and getting to know people in them. This sounds like a lot of work, but it can be done in your spare/when you have time. I also think it’s important to spend just as much time browsing and praising other people’s art as you do promoting your own. People are a lot more likely to check out your work if you’ve seen there’s before. Lastly; I would try to find communities that run initiatives that help artists. Like /success, where I do artist spotlights and other things to help get artists more exposure.

Ha ha ha… yep, all basic things I do already, and have been doing since February, but the growth has simply fallen off since $degen’s price dipped. I have 20+ years as a marketing professional, so I know all of these things, but the assumption being made is that artists aren’t doing them. That’s the wrong assumption. We all know this playbook because we have used it on other platforms. I’ll check out your channel, but I’m already stretched thin across /superrare (which has a number of initiatives to boost artists, and @jonathancolton’s /nature and @inceptionally’s /itookaphoto. At the end of the day, it is about ROI. I cannot spend all day, every day here if there isn’t a return on the time being invested.

I’m not making any assumptions, these are things I’ve learned after having conversations with a lot of artists, many of whom have started doing better since adding it to their routine. You say you’ve been doing all of these things since February but this is the first time we’ve come across each other. If you stick to the same channels and the same crowds, you’re not likely to grow here, yet. Which group chats are you in?

Essentially, I hit those three channels on a regular rotation: /superrare, /itookaphoto, and /nature, but I also post to /justbuild, /flora, /photography, /mfers, /degen-art, /art-share, /bnw, /architecturelove, and dozens of others. Core channels are daily, and then across the week through a variety of other channels. I’m in a number of artist focused group chats including a SuperRare chat focused on boosting artist profiles, CCC organized by @nomadicframe, a group from the Whale community, another group of artists that have been connected since 2021 with people like @aferg.eth and @walasavagephoto, a group of active and engaged multidisciplinary artists here on Farcaster, artist chats for HODLers for artists like @intrepid and @newlightvisuals, The Line with @mintface, and a bunch of others that seem to have cooled off in the last three or four months.
