Elon removing headlines is a masterstroke The headlines are written by a separate team inside news orgs, you can guess why. Every last honest journalist grumbles about this Concurrently, no one reads the fine print anymore. Only headlines The death of headlines as the primary vehicle for narrative is great

but it won't make people read more media articles. the goal is obvious - to make people stay on twitter instead of getting to external websites. silver lining is that they might post their articles on twitter (and pay musk for distribution) and ppl would dig in instead of commenting on headlines alone

agree. it is incredibly easy to hate on this decision, but it is much more fun and challenging to steelman why it was made. it is a net positive for free speech because i believe clickbait, disinformation, spam will become easier to identify. cc myself: warpcast.com/ted/0xfdb61907

Unless they also remove preview images, people will start making those more and more outrageous to increase clicks (see YouTube thumbnails).

Now those teams will just put the clickbait headlines in the tweet. No one on Twitter reads the fine print anyway.

Won’t news publications just start including text headlines in the image?

I feel like no matter what Elon does, and no matter how bad an idea it is, there's always someone out there who calls it a "masterstroke".
