something i've had to learn over time is to "fold pre" -- a poker term for folding early and not playing a hand at all. this is standard advice for hands that need to go just right for you to win more generally, this means not to get involved in things that are marginally good or that i feel meh about a good reminder to myself https://www.scimitar.capital/p/the-jackpot-age

My poker downfall — wanting to play ALL the hands. Trying to get more disciplined. And yes carries over into life.

I was just thinking about this exact concept recently and this is a perfect analogy for it! It's so hard to do. The allure of "but if I could pull out off..." is dangerously tempting. Maybe it comes from the video game mentality where you can save and retry until you get it perfect, despite the odds. Gotta play the odds more intelligently when in high risk adventures IRL.

And that the better something is working for you, the hands that you’re folding pre are increasingly more tempting to play

Maybe it’s a weakness I’ve really struggled with, and now I’m super drawn to this idea. Another way to look at it is: never gamble or take the upper hand in situations where everything doesn’t depend on you and your own abilities.

Love this, great life lesson hidden in poker advice. Sometimes the best move is knowing when not to play.
