something i've had to learn over time is to "fold pre" -- a poker term for folding early and not playing a hand at all. this is standard advice for hands that need to go just right for you to win more generally, this means not to get involved in things that are marginally good or that i feel meh about a good reminder to myself https://www.scimitar.capital/p/the-jackpot-age

Maybe it’s a weakness I’ve really struggled with, and now I’m super drawn to this idea. Another way to look at it is: never gamble or take the upper hand in situations where everything doesn’t depend on you and your own abilities.
