Blockchains are fundamentally a local phenomenon wrt astronomy. The speed of light poses issues with synchronizing state across large distances. So if we proliferate the universe, crypto will be fractured.

High latency interop channels? As long as you can keep light clients synced ๐Ÿคฃ

The book Neptune's Brood plays with this mechanic in a really fun way. They have the concept of fast money (in local systems) and slow money (for moving value between star systems) and complex derivatives used to fund planetary infrastructure. Also it's a heist story ๐Ÿ˜ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neptune%27s_Brood

I believe this is one of the goals of IPC (InterPlanetary Consensus). But also, speed of light on earth guarantees causal islands of various sizes based on your latency/liveness demands. So itโ€™s even a problem here. Most systems need to accommodate eventual consistency on some scale.

Wouldn't a 'connected existence' be a fundamentally local phenomenon in this context?
