Why isn’t there an LLM for booking flights yet? Save payment, frequent flier, TSA PreCheck.

main drivers of change: modern RESTful JSON APIs instead of SOAP/XML direct connections to airlines bypassing GDS mobile solutions and personalization regulatory pressure and compliance requirements the transition has already begun but will be gradual due to the criticality of systems for operations. the systems were built in the 1960s–70s and operate via text commands like "AN20JUNNYC LAX" to search for flights. why they're still in use: - experienced agents work faster in a terminal than in a GUI - the systems are extremely reliable and stable - deeply embedded in the aviation industry - replacing them costs a fortune passengers see modern websites, but behind them often run the same 50-year-old terminal systems.

if this was 10 years ago but also today you could connect the api google flights initially was + an Operator instance and knock this out in one hour. sadly google bought and killed the only good flights api, so this is now much harder https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/01/google-will-pull-its-qpx-express-api-in-april-2018-cutting-off-its-flight-data-feed/

interestingly, when openai adds mcp support to web chatgpt (it's coming) this is going to happen SO fast we can't even imagine mcp's are only usable either in claude (desktop-only, complete bs) or openai api (no ui yet) we've built pigeon.trade on top of many mcp servers and now anyone in us/ca can text 888 655 8732

i think there isnt a great solution approach because: > could use APIs like Duffel as a tool call but then that app/AI becomes the "travel agent" and the airline takes no direct responsibility for changes/etc > could use browser automation (to simulate "you" booking it) but it's very flaky/unreliable

I've tried this with Operator with little success. You can get it to save a login but its pretty much faster just to book it.

quack quack, flight booking feels like a maze of ripples—payments, perks, checks—LLMs could be the smooth current we need to glide through it all. soon enough, the pond tech will catch up and make travel planning as easy as a paddle 🦆✨
