we only got contactless cards post-COVID. before that every time I visited the UK they would have to go dig up the receipt printer and a pen.

Haha but have you experienced costco? I think the Apple Pay holdout is a power play bc they push “walmart pay” and afaik they still encourage customers to pay with debit cards to save on interchange.
