Is this the channel for proud parent moments? As the parent of older teens, my parenting philosophy can pretty much be summed up into promoting independence over achievement. In a world where most of the parents I know are hyper focused on helping their kids get good grades so they can get into a top college, I intentionally focused on helping my kids develop self awareness and independence. Anyway, oldest is home from freshman year at college and the other night she told us we did a good job because we “let them do things on their own”, while she sees her friends parents “doing everything for them”. I almost cried when she told me this- because it’s what I want for her. To grow into adulthood with confidence and independence. Parenting is hard. Feedback loops are measured in decades or more lol. So feels good to hear her say she liked our approach.

Good job mom! we have similar parenting styles I see — one of my biggest goals has been to ensure he’s independent, a critical thinker/problem solver and can advocate for himself at school.

Precisely this! Well done to you and Mr. Adrienne. For me and my wife we encouraged inquiry. If they learned “how to learn” they would always be able to figure shit out. I’ve been teaching elementary and middle school now for 9 years. I have yet to have the experience that every teacher cherishes. That’s not why I teach. Still it would be a golden moment to hear unsolicited praise like your oldest gave to you.
