this doesn’t constitute proof but may help a bounty hunter:
I put forth the duplicate thesis (multiple external IPs pointing to the same underlying data store) because ~500 hubs on this https://farcaster.spindl.xyz have german IPs in two locations via Contabo gmbh. It seems this dashboard only gives 1000 hubs so its either outdated or itll be rather hard to prove 1000 fake hubs

I prepared a set of data which I believe *maybe* renders a reasonable amount of hubs (over 1500) fake.
Brief:
- Started fetching sample peers using @pinatacloud 's public hub [now I'm banned!!!! ;-)]
- Extracted external data on them using other endpoints.
- Found *Duplication on single ip but multiple ports* 250/7500
- Ran a portscan on 2281, 2282, 2283, & Found closed ports on clients even on gossipsub: 1300/7500
- Got hostnames, Contabo runs plenty of instances
- There are ToDos to go deeper (e.g. is some peer inbound at all?). there are already data about the sync status, numMessages, ...

will hubs ever have a proof mechanism for operators? as of now it’s volunteered, but can easily be spoofed.

hmmm... I am probably running a fake hub. It worked fine until it didn't because of reason (3) "underpowered hardware".
So that's 1.

Plot twist: that was the plan from the beginning - create thousands of hubs to make V suspicious and force him to offer a bounty for a task that will be easily achievable by the very same person that created the fake hubs.

my assumption would be that to the extent there are "fake" ones, they think that hub runners will get an airdrop, and so they're trying to get that.

Curious that even innocent might be considered a "Fake Hub" if it meets the criteria. We are building a decentralized indexer for Farcaster activies and concerned it may harming ecosystem if we replace current hub to lighweight one 😂

I'm really curious about what benefits someone would get from faking it. I run one of the nodes myself to ensure my application has a stable node to use.
