The American feds got Ryan Wedding (aka "El Jefe") the other day after chasing him for years. This guy was basically the Canadian version of El Chapo and he had an arc not dissimilar to Breaking Bad. He went from olympic snowboarder to cocaine kingpin. He was on the FBI's 10 most wanted list by the time of his arrest.
I've been of the opinion for over 20 years that ending the drug war and legalizing/regulating all drugs is the only way to prevent organized crime and violence of the sort that Ryan Wedding conducted. This approach also facilitates a harm reduction approach for users. Drug supplies are clean and predictable this way. Contact with addicts is also facilitated thus allowing them to more easily get help.
This might sound like an alarming departure from the type of relationship that government policy and law enforcement have with the drug trade today, but it is impossible to fully eradicate drugs. People will always get a substance if they truly want it, and drug producers will always be there to supply it for a price.
