We're raising our son trilingual (English, Japanese, Mandarin), living in Okinawa, Japan.

My wife and I speak Japanese and English with each other, 2yo speaks Japanese at daycare, English with me, and Mandarin with Mom and Grandma.

Definitely took longer than other kids to start, but It somehow seems to be working.

My cousins who speak 6 languages fluently as adults were quiet kids when they were very small. When I would watch them 1:1 and they’d talk to me in French I’d simply say English please and they’d switch. They’d forget 10 mins later and I’d ask them to switch for me. Then at about 6, they couldn’t shut up. And the more excited about something they’d get they’d constantly switch and always enjoyed listening to them. My favorite was hearing them make up conjugations like: “today I eated  cinnamon bread for lunch!” 

And I’d reply: Oh wow, you ate cinnamon bread for lunch, how fun!

They’ve never heard an adult say eated. They made that shit up! I was so proud!  They tried their best. It was hours of entertainment for me. But their parents worried about them too. A lot of data a studies are not around bilingual kids and it’s a shame. Their brains are working triple overtime and we should be studying them the most! We’d learn so much.

thank you. indeed, the language developmental stages are completely off for us. a challenging confounding factor is that he does have some attributes the correspond with other developmental differences, so it made us a bit nervous about language. 

But he seems to be smoothing out and catching up rapidly, so we'll see!

You are doing great. Don’t worry about anything you read about language development by certain ages. All that nonsense is for monolingual kids. Your little one will be so ahead of the game and be able to learn a new language in school for fun! Your son is so lucky to have you!

Had friends they did daily language when all the family spoke the same language on specific day of the week. Everyone speaks 3 languages now.

When we live in Italy we spoke Japanese at home. 
When we stay in Japan we speak Italian at home. 
Fortunately my wife can speak Italian and I can speak Japanese. They grew up like that.

Who did your kids speak what language with?

Starting so early is fundamental. My kids are trilingual too (Japanese, English, Italian)  but we spent some years in Italy to increase the confidence. He will thank you once he grows up 🙌🏻

Oh no, I wish. I wanted to major in Japanese (just after high school, the joint degree idea came later) but it didn't work out, so it's English (please don't judge me, I feel my grammar is garbage now). My mother tongue is Lithuanian, then English and decent Russian (tho that grammar is tough). Bits and pieces of Spanish and Japanese.

This is so awesome! Mandarin and Japanese are notoriously not easy languages to learn. Fun fact, I've tried to get into a joint Japanese-Mandarin language degree in the UK 😅 emphasis on tried

That's a lot of languages! I'm happy to be somewhat proficient in Japanese, but four languages growing up is awesome!

Feels like this was how I grew up

Fukien, Filipino at home
English, Filipino, and Mandarin at kindergarten to high school 
Basic French and Russian in college

Its fun being able to understand other people especially when they talk about you in a language you know 😆

How consistent is the Mandarin exposure? We were considering adding Japanese at a later time

yeah the double up with mom and grandma really helps at his age. As he gets older, I'm guessing we'll spend time in Taiwan or China, but tbd

No real idea how things will turn out, but it's fun to watch for now

my brother has a daughter with a German woman. mara speaks on German. my brother speaks to her in spanish. she understands everything, but somehow only speaks German

this makes me think that for them to learn properly they need to have *a specific place* (can be whatever) where they actually practice training the non-common language

this is amazing. our little one is just about to start and I would love her to speak fluently in English and Spanish. Mom is Italian so maybe we go trilingual as well but needs to be set into practice how you have done it here. So cool
