https://x.com/DellAnnaLuca/status/1806036301009011054 Seeing so much hate for this diagram that would have been accepted as common wisdom 5 years ago makes me sad, and makes me somewhat more scared for the future of the world. I hope we can snap out of this mode of thinking soon.

A common reply I see is: "you just set it up so that your outgroup *is* the set of people doing bad things" The challenge with this approach is that "people doing good things", for any reasonable definition of good, are not a coherent social group, or at least if they are, that configuration is very unstable.

I feel like this is a symptom of a people dying to feel something in a world that adapts to their every opinion.

I think all the people getting upset about the diagram would have also gotten upset about it 5 years ago, but the difference is they now have more of a platform to express their opinions, and they feel more comfortable doing it because they see other like minded people onlne. In short, the bigots have always been here, but now they're more emboldened.

I think this might just be a case of shitty social media commenting dynamics not symptomatic of a larger degradation of open mindedness

Ingroup vs. outgroup dynamics are hard to solve because hatred of the outgroup could be baked into the ingroup's identity. If that hatred goes away, then the ingroup is at risk of an identity crisis. But then, why would you other-ize people and fuel bonds by stoking hatred towards the outgroup in the first place?

This infographic is too vague to prompt productive discussion imo Someone posted the original version which is more interesting to discuss because it focuses on an actual issue
