Spying by foreign companies which can be influenced by an antagonistic nation state is much more dangerous for your democracy than spying by local companies.

I see it as different rules for different platforms. Facebook and others do the same thing. It’s just “homegrown spying: ok, foreign: bad”. We need a level playing field of privacy protection, not a witch hunt

My take: TikTok isn’t free from CCP influence. It is 100 percent algorithmic. So yes the US should adopt better data protection laws but the attack vector I’d be concerned about would something like China invades Taiwan and scrubs TikTok of Taiwan advocates and pushes all China POV on 150M Americans

anecdotally, most worrying example I heard was someone visiting class at a school talking about Taiwan and noting that Taiwan is not part of China

And one student puts their hand up and asks "but I thought Taiwan was part of China"
