Riding on the "nerd" wave, it was a way for people to feel smart without actually learning about anything. The level of sexism in that show is nuts. Also they employed Mayim Bialik who's hardcore zi*nist. Fun fact that I might be wrong about: I think that's the last actually popular sitcom with a laugh track.
