I think I agree with OP. It is parasitic no matter what. If everyone looked for system inefficiencies, then the system would not work.

You could argue there's a level of parasitic action that is positive in highlighting system flaws, but that level is pretty easily reached - and surpassed many times over - by the nature of incentives, indeed.

So it seems like a fair assessment to say parasitic=wrong (OP didn't say it, I am).

Are you talking about certain types of passive income or all passive income?

I struggle to build any argument against exactly what he expressed (and I think there's many emotional reactions against ideas that diverge a little or a lot from what he expressed).

I get passive income from books I wrote years ago and people still buy now, and love. (Or hate, depending on the buyer)

Yes, I agree. I don't think that's parasitic - you're getting paid for work you have done. Even more importantly than personal effort, you are getting paid, today, for value your past actions are providing to society, today.

This is why I see value in OP's wording: he attacks the idea of passive income = the idea of getting paid for doing nothing, and the people who are obsessed with this idea (it seems ok to think about it, it seems like someone who would think about this all the time would be... unbalanced, I think we all see people like that who end up following gurus on YouTube and Tiktok and so on.)

"Delayed income for work completed" is a much more positive idea. It tethers the money stream to value provided.

I think the not doing anything and getting paid statement is a bit misleading. This isn't passive income for one, it's delayed income for work completed, and this concept I don't think exists practically in the world, which kind of makes his statement a bit moot.

if he's talking about handouts and help from the government for example, the very nature of this relationship is simbiotic not parasitic, although a lot of people like to name it that way, and  it does get exploited in certain circumstances to become this. But this isn't all situations. Saying it's parasitic is inflammatory and a little unhelpful.
