How much would you pay for Google Maps, if there were no alternatives? I’d prob do $1,000+ / month. And yet I get it for free and am hardly ever grateful for it. Lesson in there?

There would certainly be cheaper, less fully featured alternatives that would attract the vast majority of users But if the premium/paid features were good enough at the right price then it could work $1000/month is insanity. Maybe $20-$100

Sir you’re breaking my thought experiment by involving competitors The point is about the insane value of the thing itself Imagine doing Rome without it? (I couldn’t even do without it in nyc when I lived there)

true value is a separate thing from business model lots of things are valuable that are hard to monetize

Agree - I said “no alternatives” bc I think the interesting this is that we all get something really valuable for free I almost think we would love it and value it more if we paid a lot for it It’s a weird phenomenon of how things got a lot better in a way that’s pretty silent to us

i’d argue we pay an excessive amount in data to use “free” services like google maps. sure, no credit card needed but the massive user profiles they've collected on all of us like our location, searches and behavior are all collected for the purposes of data mining and targeted ads. so yeah it feels free but it’s not to be clear, i’m cool with most the tradeoffs bc these services enrich our day-to-day lives but it’d be nice to keep a bit of privacy as well anyway, felt too strongly compelled to scroll past without dropping that lol gm /rant over

people always say this, but what has this *actually* cost you? (whenever people are talking about this it mostly seems to be something theoretical)

it's not literally keeping me up at night but the amount of data they collect is crazy to even imagine. a bit creepy
