My waiter told me that they no longer accept American Express
because of Brexit. Apparently England was the guarantor of the US money system for all of the EU, but since they pulled out, the American banks have had to negotiate agreements with every individual country. How tedious. “It’s been two months since it started working in Germany, so I think about two months before it starts working over here.”

I think he's fudding you - the owner just doesnt want to pay the swipe fees (or they just got a new terminal that doesn't support it)

Don’t think so – haven’t once been able to use my American Express card in any shop or grocery store in Czechia thus far.

Yeah I think it’s the swipe fees for real. Oh Uber amex works (since international anyway)

Uber does process in Czechia directly yes Re Germany Amex has never not been an option here though the high fees have next to no German restaurant / smaller shop (think not big company) accept it. Works well for online payments though which are mostly stripe and PayPal checkouts in germany

Correct. I’m actually kinda glad that visa/mastercard now work in Germany. I used to make a once yearly trip to Berlin and it was notorious for just being cash only!!! I consider every time I can touch less cash, kind of a win. So now the only holdout is Japan. Big hotel chains (Hyatt/marriott/ihg) do accept amex in Germany though thankfully

Yes big company Amex will always be fine they stomach the cost and notice the high ticket clients often use Amex for rewards Germany btw still is cash heavy. Ask your hairdresser for card payment or even better the local kebab shop 😁 Some allow but none will be happy with you hehe Some local food markets and shops also won’t take credit Card but debit only (way lower fees)

Yeah I have noticed this. I haven’t cut hair, and have avoided the smaller shops, and yeah, I think the last time I was in Nuremberg year before last, I was there during the Christmas market and had to use cash. So some euros, just not a lot required. And yeah, debit card thing btw - even the laundromat I use in London is like that! They prefer debit fees over credit fees
