Apparently England was the guarantor of the US money system for all of the EU, but since they pulled out, the American banks have had to negotiate agreements with every individual country. How tedious.

wow. i'm trying to think, but the last time i was there, i might have just visa/mastercard (which are also american, btw!). except for the hotel, i don't think i managed amex anywhere else

Don’t think so – haven’t once been able to use my American Express card in any shop or grocery store in Czechia thus far.
