The other day a button appeared in the living room. I was asked to press it. I did.

At first, nothing happened, but then one of the Assistants gave me a treat. I assumed this was a new ritual: push strange object, make eye contact, receive snack. Fine. I can do that.

But then things changed.

I pressed the button, and Assistant #1 pointed instead. Toward a machine. I investigated. A treat was already there, waiting. Mysterious.

Now the button moves to different places every day. The machine, sometimes too. I press the button, and with a noise I would describe as suspicious, a treat emerges from the machine. The Assistants act very pleased. I pretend to understand.

Am I training the button? Or the Assistants?

It’s unclear. But I remain committed to the process.
