What we're working on this week: 

1. Warplet improvements - price alerts for your favorite tokens, improving trending token filters.

2. New color scheme - giving the mobile app a little touch up. 

3. Tweaking the feed algo to recommend more interesting content. 

4. Lots of small improvements - fixed bugs with video, slow loading pages, miniapps etc. 

5. App-based storage - make it easy for apps to offer 'free' onboarding for Farcaster users.

CONTROL BUTTONS REQUEST

“I want to remove this user’s casts from my home feed.”

and

“I still want to see if they reply, tag, or send me a message.”

Both of these are not simultaneously possible with the control buttons we currently have in Farcaster.

After experimenting and reading about them, here’s my understanding of our control buttons:


> Block

The blocked account cannot interact with me. I can’t see them and they can’t see me.


> Mute

The muted account can interact with me, but I won’t know it. They can’t see me but I can’t see them.

I no longer see the account in my home feed - effective immediately. But I will also no longer see their replies under my own casts, which is a big step beyond what I need. Their own content may not be my cup of tea as I scroll. It doesn’t mean I want them to disappear completely from view. For that, I already have block.

First described a year ago as a button not to over-think and simply provides information for the team to improve the overall algorithm. Then described more recently as needing improvement but that pressing 3x would function like mute.

Pressing 3x seemed to work temporarily. But after experimenting thoroughly with this button recently, I find no amount of pressing it removes users from my home feed anymore.

In addition to my own frustrations over the current functionality, I also see many casts indicating other users feel similar lack of control over their feed lately. It’s also the #1 question/feedback from people I’ve recently invited to Farcaster.

I believe lack of clarity around feed control is leading to unnecessary agitation over their experience scrolling, as well as with each other. Like a city that’s starting to feel overcrowded, Farcaster would benefit from enabling users get space from each other.

I don’t want my neighbor to be eliminated off the face of the earth. I just don’t want them to be the first person I see in the morning when I walk down the street.


What I would like to see:

Block - No change

Mute - Muted account does not appear in my Home feed, but replies and mentions are still visible (this is how X does it and is likely how most users interpret the word “mute”). 

Show fewer like this - I now believe this button should be removed or renamed. It is confusing if it does not have direct impact on user experience. If this is a necessary button for the team for overall algorithm improvement, I recommend renaming the button to something less action-oriented. “Show” implies action will be triggered, whereas “Not Interested” might be more appropriate as a statement of preference that may or may not have any effect.

Would appreciate others to chime in if they are feeling similar frustrations or if they have a different POV.

What are you observing in your feed experience that makes #3 important?

The usual.. slop content. They keep hiding people I want to see, bringing me people I don't want to see

Define slop content? Any particular topics to the posts that you don’t want to see? I’m just curious.

Also, do you follow those people? I’ve recently started clicking “Why is this cast here?” to see why it’s in my feed and unfollowing as necessary.

Unfollowing feels a bit brutal from a community perspective, but lately have been wanting to use Farcaster less and less due to my feed quality. Trying to do what’s in my control first to right the situation.

Not the best, but that makes it less addictive which is good :)
