Update on the story below. He can’t surf anymore due to his sweet old age, so fishing is his main hobby now. I got gifted some of his fresh-caught ling cod and rock cod fillets.

His name is on this poster he kept from one of the most legendary invite-only surf championships. Coincidentally, it took place where I was first introduced to surfing exactly 40 years later.

Conversations with elders like this are so precious to me. I hold each story with gratitude, knowing one day they’ll be gone - and so will I. But through our lifetimes, we can connect memories across centuries.

I used fresh cherry tomatoes, chopped basil, copious amounts of garlic, and white wine to make a sauce that felt right for summer. Served with green beans and a simple bed of rice. Grateful for all the life that nourishes us.

Yes :) I usually wing it with the sauces I make for whitefish. I find it's easygoing and forgiving with different flavors so hard to mess up.

I knew I wanted cherry tomatoes and basil for a summery taste, so I sautéed them first with olive oil and lots of garlic - not for long as I wanted the tomatoes to hold their shape. Then I added white wine and a squeeze of lemon (never a bad idea with cod). But the combination of tomatoes, white wine, and citrus got quite acidic. So I toned it down at the end by adding a little salted butter. That's it for the sauce.

I prefer to pan fry fish in cast iron with just salt, black pepper, and olive oil. Once it got crispy on both sides, I poured the sauce all over it.

The green beans were just cooked with garlic, salt, pepper, olive oil.
