what do we think the effect would be if we paid politicians way way more e.g. US president $1b salary for four years, senators $100m etc

can’t even fathom what this would do, but I assume only make them further complacent than they already are we desperately need to move to a results based payment system for those roles in society going forward

They only get the salary if their policies generate proportionate revenues (and/or improvements to some other more important societal metrics).

President: Not much difference. Senators: They'd never retire.

There’d be a lot more competition leading to better surface-level options. The problem is democracy selects for popularity rather than effectiveness so they would just be more charismatic, not necessarily better.

They would be less corrupted I suppose? But it will require something like a "liquid democracy" (= being able to change our vote during a mandate if they do something we don't like)

doubt comp is the main factor preventing talent flow to politics or impact when in. Feels more imp to make govt a proving ground vs resting ground by (a) making post-political life a forced reality and (b) one driven by effectiveness in office vs access. Term limits + campaign finance reform good place to start.

No change. The same demagogues that win office today would still win office. They would just be even richer. Your qualms lie with the system itself, not arbitrarily set salaries. A system designed to give power to charismatic demagogues will do so regardless of compensation.
