what do we think the effect would be if we paid politicians way way more e.g. US president $1b salary for four years, senators $100m etc

No change. The same demagogues that win office today would still win office. They would just be even richer. Your qualms lie with the system itself, not arbitrarily set salaries. A system designed to give power to charismatic demagogues will do so regardless of compensation.
