not american and dont feel save thinking about being in a plane anywhere near a geography where it's mountainous in the desert and the plane could get shot down any time by all kinds of state or non state actors

Whirlwind by James Clavell is a very interesting (and flawed) view of Iranian culture during the Islamic revolution. Like his other books, he flattens the culture to make it palatable for western readers but a great read nonetheless.
