We pass so many people on the street or on the road every day and we don’t even get to know their hopes and dreams and their desires what they wanted for breakfast who their childhood crush was how they felt when their mom got sick it’s actually pretty crazy that I don’t even know their name or their life story

I barely ever known even a single person I can spend years with them. And I still don’t know them. How the hell do you even start to fathom all the people that are driving on the freeway? Or all the people that are on the train, not the one that you’re about to get on. But the one that’s full of people going in the opposite way during rush-hour in the subway. Yeah that one. Or you look into the distance and you see all these houses hundreds of lights in the night probably thousands more than you can count. And most of them had dinner at the table in the dining room. I just don’t get it.

I wonder if Zucky felt the same and then things got out of hand and snowballed into him building the panopticon

yeah I think about this from time to time not just this, the fact that you can never really know anyone fully because only parts you get to know are the ones they share with the world while what they have inside is everything under the iceberg and now multiply that with 8 billion people ironical saying the above because more often than note, we don't even know our own icebergs

I take my time with people. I often sit in a coffee shops and wait, just enjoying the sounds and the taste of my coffee. Over the years, I’ve lost count of how many strangers have shared their stories with me, most just needed to be heard. I have noticed that for many people it is easier to speak from the heart to a stranger than to someone close. I wonder why. There is a quiet, magnetic energy that brings two people together in those moments. While I listen, I sit with the question: Why did this person come into my life today? The answer always arrives. I met some of the most incredible people through this practice.

Moreover: “In each of my friends there is something that only some other friend can fully bring out.” (Lewis) The dynamic of not only knowing about them but knowing them in a way that only others can. It is humbling to know that I cannot know my kids in the same way my wife knows them. I watch the way she draws them out with a joyful jealousy. What a massive, glorious gift.

I have this exact same thought on my commute. We kind of shut down our sensors and thoughts when in public, in a numb transit mode. But everyone has emotion, dreams and aspirations as much as every single one of us do. I also have on a similar level, feelings of emptiness when knowing people you’ve come to know and grow up with for years can just become so distant and strangers in a matter of days if they choose to be so.

Sometimes I look at people on the street and start to make up stories about them. Thinking about their favorite things, why they look that way at that moment, where they are walking to at that moment. Things like that make up my day

Damn… this hit deep. It’s wild how many lives are unfolding all around us, full stories, emotions, moments and we’ll never know most of them. Makes you feel small, but also kind of connected in a weird way.
