I am fascinated by the idea of 'rooms'

Rooms are fascinating. You build a house, or a building and you say - hey this is a room. It has this purpose. You just put up some walls thought, that's really it. And voilà - all of a sudden you have a space. And now the space has its own energy. 

For example, a dining room has a very different function, than a bathroom. And they are just some random space that we created out of the blue, to assign meaning to it. And we can have very different ways to approach different rooms. 

Saying that you are "good in the boardroom" is very different from being "good in the bedroom"

So if you think about it from this pathway - I think that’s (why weights in models work btw) - there are natural pathways, and they do often change over time, over cultures, over histories, over places - but gradient descent towards local minima for poetic ways to describe spaces. We use metaphor to describe what we know, what we feel, and of course we will use - and plan to use terms that we all universally have access to (rooms) - or at least that’s one of them. I think though as new technology gets introduced, the metaphors that feel fresh, often use new things and new ways of expressing similar vibes and feelings through different apparatus.

There are sort of cultural, historical, and human assignments and pathways and connections - reminds me of Poetics of Space by Bachelard - that talk about natural ways that these pathways exist between words, or phrases especially since rooms are something we all experience in different forms almost every day. 

Actually rare is a day where I don't enter some 'room'. If you count a tent as a sort of 'room' - I'd almost say never. There is never a day since I've been born that I haven't been in a 'room'

Bill Bryson’s At Home is a great book on exactly this subject and his writing style is always very entertaining to read.

Agreed. Building worlds requires familiarizing guests to the physics or lifeforms that exist within the ecosystem. This has high cognitive overhead upon entry into new worlds. There are also issues related to immersion in 3D vs 2D spaces that become challenging too. Text-based often becomes 2D table stake format as result. 

Interesting challenge. Perhaps our spaces for ideas are ours — just like our houses — we live like we want to live. But the idea of a shared space, the porch, still intrigues me. A personal commons area.

Directionally I couldn't agree more. I love the idea of spaces for ideas - digitally, that can be shared. I guess in a way blogs are the closest that come to this. Social media in its own way does this as well.

One problem, or i guess reaction that I have with digital spaces is that they are often infinite - and we orient ourselves (literally) because we know our own orientation with respect to the inertial frame vs world frame. but if the world frame keeps changing its really hard. Because blogs are individual 'structures' but it's hard to find shared spaces, like one might have a conversation with someone else. It's a single player game, currently.

I think about this often in relationship to digital spaces. It feels like there should be an equivalency of spaces for different things. Metaphorically, my porch or patio hold things that I’m willing to share with the public, whereas my bedroom or office is private. Spaces for ideas.

the boardroom in context with the bedroom is funny, who knows maybe someone is good at presentations in the bedroom 😂
