part of me agrees part of me feel like irl actions are the only way to get the majority of people to feel like something really matters (vs. just being a thing behind a screen) please discuss https://x.com/jordancooper/status/1936196134822621631?s=46&t=u8pItK-nu0TdtOG8jcLETA

Haha I’m an irl protest maxi. Whatever cause you care about, you just have to show up. In person, online, whatever is convenient and empowering for you!

25 oct 2019. i was here. more than one million people on the streets of santiago, after chile exploded into a disagreement that was so deeply embedded into ourself and seen as injustice that we all said collectively: ENOUGH enough of the bullshit. enough with the steal. the meme was: enough with the dick in the end of the eye we we are tired of being fucked in the eye this protest was the coronation of a month of protests. i went to so many of them. i felt that i was fighting for something worth fighting I THOUGHT THINGS WOULD CHANGE eventually this protests led to a global vote in chile to get a new constitution it was voted YES. FINALLY DEMOCRACY WON. but no. they continued to put their dick directly into our eyes, publicly. and their strength is so deeply embedded into the way things work on the normal world that we need a true and transformative way to just rearchitecture how the whole fucking game is played and that only happens on the internet IMHO

Protests DO happen online, like the Reddit blackout. But unless there is significant disruption, it means nothing. Also, why protest IRL greivances online when you can feel the mob energy irl?

I think today’s protests are better for protestors solidarity than anything else. That being said they remind me a bit of the theory Stephen king says that watching horror movies stops violence. Going to a protest gives emotional catharsis even without solving issues. There’s some good stuff on the failures of folk activism in “inventing the future”

I think good evidence of this is the Gaza stance vs Iran stance people have had. Influencers like Theo Von, Tucker (though I do consider him a journalist) swayed narrative more than protests did, even in the different messaging sent from the WH in those issues

an organised protest is just a thinly veiled threat to the elites that if they don't capitulate they will face organised violence. irl actions are very important

depends on the context, but still believe in a mix of both. in some cases, change will only happen if there’s an irl protest (possibly evolving into a movement/revolution) in parallel with the digital one. ‘Winter on Fire’ is an amazing documentary that showcases this in action https://m.imdb.com/title/tt4908644/ ps in prev life, organized human+animal rights movements with ~800 activists at peak, mostly successful.

What was the last protest that made a difference? I’ll wait :( Even today’s unions are nothing more than a tax. Collective bargaining isn’t as important once the level of life it high enough that any advantage is just surplus.
