I buy old knackered 2nd hand paperbacks every chance I get I love how paper used to have visible texture (as opposed to new books and their shiny, flat, dull paper stock)

Perhaps the reason we love books is the same reason we all love fireplaces: it is something we (society) have been using for such a long time that it simply becomes part of our fabric. We have more convenient options, but they usually come at the expense of a more "human version" of that experience.
