This comments in this thread below are a gold mine for NYC building history and fun facts.  Most impressive is that the Woolworth building only took 20 months of construction to build in 1911-1912.

Hard to imagine even a 5 story apartment building getting done in NYC in that timespan today.

I was walking to the office in New York this morning and noticed an arrestingly beautiful high-rise above me. Turns out it was the Woolworth building, which I'm a bit embarrassed to say I'd never noticed or heard of before.

yeah its a shame tbh.  It's like we're trying to do the same stuff as China in terms of building/developmentd with a hand tied behind our back.

Which is really too bad. I got to see a coffee shop emerge from an empty space in a mall within a week in China. Glass walls, plumbing, interior, the works from start to finish

When I'm in NYC, I look up and think about the cathedrals of capitalism that have been built. 

It's inspiring. 

But, the suburbs are just as impressive horizontally. 

The buildings, the houses, the roads, require just as much planning and investment. 

They just respect different cultures and restraints.

Ultimately, that NYC skyscraper exists because of that American suburb.

So, they might be more visually impressive but only because they are financed off the back of everything the suburb does for them.

What are some of the most impressive buildings in the American suburbs? 

I tend to think the vertical buildings are more impressive but open to changing my perspective on that

Billionaires Row is this. They aren't the tallest by footage but are pushing the boundaries by footprint.

Additionally, American suburbs are just as impressive but they are horizontal vs vertical.
