once insurance companies embrace the inevitability that self driving is safer things will start moving quicker. that said, people like control even at expense of error. there's a difference between a machine crashing you and you crashing your machine and cars in the usa seem very connected with a sense of liberty and freedom. so i expect some chaos as this all shakes out.

interested to see if this accounts for roadway function class interstate traffic would be a large confounder as according to NHTSA it's less dangerous while most likely accounting for more miles https://crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/ViewPublication/813118

Would be interested in details in cost of car vs accident as well. I'd imagine someone in a model x is much more careful of a driver than in model y. Then take into consideration costs of car under 40k and no accidents. The ev piece is a part but the autopilot might be even more so.
