if your consumer app doesn't make the user money, doesn't give users status & you don't have existing distribution, it's going to take a while, and you may still fail.

exceptions solved a real problem, whether it took "a while" is a bit subjective - uber (though maybe calling a black car from your phone was status) - venmo - WhatsApp - spotify
