It's a bitter liqueur made in Chicago - think Suze, but without the sweetness. It's definitely an acquired taste - when I was last in Chicago, we'd take a shot of it at each bar we went to, and it took three bars in a single night for it to grow on me. It's also fun to just introduce people to and watch their reactions. Some people REALLY don't like bitter.
