No one ever talks about how special old school red sauce Italian restaurants are here. We truly have the best Italian. And no one ever goes to Arthur Ave but that's where you gotta go. Get it all. The sandwiches, the pastas, the rice, salads, the fried bread+mozz app. All of it. Make sure you lift before and after.

Roosevelt island is a food desert. Not even worth trying the handful of spots there unless it’s to get quick bites at the bodega

Of course a ton of good options across Manhattan, some places below:

For pizza I like John’s of Bleecker, Rubirosa is very well regarded (haven’t been) or L’industrie if you’re looking for more of a slice spot (personally prefer these to Joe’s & prince st which are good but also available in CA)

Essa bagel is the favorite bagel spot I recall in Manhattan 

Had a good experience with omakase at Moko a while back, pretty affordable by nyc standards 

Can’t go wrong with levain cookies or cheesecake from Junior’s 

I’m sure some New Yorkers can offer some more guidance, a lot of great stuff in Brooklyn but not sure if you’re venturing in that direction

The first one is best for beers and apps. I’d really recommend shyaphale (spelled something like that), like empanada but 100x better. 
The second one you could go around for pork fry ufff it’s so good. Lmk if you do go
