When a purported journalist skips even the utmost basics of verifying information, maybe laughter is the only recourse we have left indeed.

This is I think more of a "JD Vance & Couch" type case where you know it's not true but you make fun of it anyway because of the general dislike towards these lib types. Essentially doubling down on the stereotype. Still, coming from such a respected journalist, it could be perceived seriously. Overall, I agree with you.

…or it’s part of the firehose of falsehood. Some people will never learn it wasn’t cocaine, but even if they do, the job is already done. Using disinformation to crack a joke is either dangerously clueless or actually deliberate.

Do you think it's the same in the JD Vance / Couch situation, where many people, including journalists made fun of it?

Did someone gradually imply that Vance was a pervert, and then, as he was negotiating an international agreement, a wave of accounts began circulating a video of him sitting on a couch splashed with water framed as semen, which that same person then eagerly shared? I don’t think it happened like that, so seems like those are two different stories.

If a=c And b=c Then a=b The examples don't have to be exactly the same, but yes, pervert conservative stereotype was the direction everyone perpetuated. To be clear, I absolutely despite JD Vance's politics. Just don't like it when we forgive lib media so easily.

Yes, but whataboutism only fuels the chaos. If no one is held to any standards, then anything goes.
