Some CEOs, notably Shopify recently mandated the use of AI. Predictably the Internet thought it was cringe or unfair or however the internet responds without complete information. But last week I was talking to a friend who is long time at Stripe and he was telling me about a the hurdles of trying to use AI internally at Stripe, which most people think is an innovative company. Imagine how much harder it is elsewhere. So when a CEO mandates the use of AI they are trying to give people a way to cut through the red tape. If it is a mandated part of your job, you have a better argument against your legal and security teams and those teams are now mandated to figure it out and quickly.

I work at Shopify. Talking to friends elsewhere, it’s wild how little tooling they have available or even know about. I’m spoiled.

I personally thought that Shopify news was very refreshing and aligned with the direction a lot of companies are going to have to inevitably take. At least by mandating employees to justify why AI can’t be the solution to asking for resources, be it money or more people, it’s a way to hedge themselves imo.

I use AI daily. It's great, and it's made annoying small tasks ("make a CLI to test this one scenario") so much simpler. That said, I resonate with some concern over a generic, top-down "use AI" mandate. It can come across as "the CEO found a new toy and thinks everyone should use it without understanding if it actually benefits people". I think AI is general-use enough to be able to be easily adapted, but, at the same time, workplace history is littered with stories of CEOs demanding people use something that only hinders people. All that is to say: I agree AI is useful, but am also at least partially sympathetic to concerns over its mandated use.
