My waiter told me that they no longer accept American Express
because of Brexit. Apparently England was the guarantor of the US money system for all of the EU, but since they pulled out, the American banks have had to negotiate agreements with every individual country. How tedious. “It’s been two months since it started working in Germany, so I think about two months before it starts working over here.”

I think he's fudding you - the owner just doesnt want to pay the swipe fees (or they just got a new terminal that doesn't support it)

Don’t think so – haven’t once been able to use my American Express card in any shop or grocery store in Czechia thus far.

Yeah I think it’s the swipe fees for real. Oh Uber amex works (since international anyway)

Uber does process in Czechia directly yes Re Germany Amex has never not been an option here though the high fees have next to no German restaurant / smaller shop (think not big company) accept it. Works well for online payments though which are mostly stripe and PayPal checkouts in germany

Correct. I’m actually kinda glad that visa/mastercard now work in Germany. I used to make a once yearly trip to Berlin and it was notorious for just being cash only!!! I consider every time I can touch less cash, kind of a win. So now the only holdout is Japan. Big hotel chains (Hyatt/marriott/ihg) do accept amex in Germany though thankfully

Amex worked great in Japan! Best currency conversion rate out of all my cards too. Only issue from what I could tell is that the cashier has to hit like three different buttons to activate it on their PoS machine, and then it takes like fifteen whole seconds to settle lol. https://farcaster.xyz/darrylyeo/0xf677ac2f

Yup amex works fine in Japan if they accept cards :) many places I go to are cash only (Tokyo, a udon place, and my fave coffee shop, are cash only). Oh - one more weird thing - Apple Pay - it doesn’t necessarily always work in Japan - you need the physical card. This even at large hotel chains! And the same actually applies in South Korea. But I do love the fact that now my suica card is in my Apple wallet. Makes commuting super easy.

Ah yes, I did need to physically insert the card quite a few times in Tokyo. Suica / Pasmo being inside Apple Pay is definitely super handy, but it’s still some extra steps and another balance to worry about. Still nothing beats just walking up and tapping your existing primary credit card in New York or Singapore.

As someone who relies so much on Apple Pay, I find needing the physical card a problem sometimes. But cash, worse problem ;) Oh yes - just using a credit card in New York or Singapore and now even London - is truly quite golden. Goodbye metcard, and oyster card ;) and the ezlink.

If and when San Francisco and Taipei get rid of Clipper and EasyCard respectively, I can finally rest 😌
