intellectual property laws are a double edged sword. they are crucial for protecting artists and creators, but make no sense when it comes to sharing knowledge, research papers, articles etc which are often stuck behind a paywall. i do wonder if blockchain could somehow be a solution to this, but mostly it’s about changing entrenched social/legal norms.

A lot of the times you can just email the original authors and they will give you a copy for free. Authors don't get paid for publishing this so they don't have an interest in gatekeeping knowledge they've already published.

You're correct. Publishers control access. Blockchain could let authors keep ownership automating licensing, distribution, and payment

It protects majors more than small artists tbh If you don't have the money to sue someone across the world, your content get used and there's nothing you can do about it Blockchain can timestamp. AI could recognise very fast. But Original Artistsℒ️ hate those two techs so... Β―\_ (ツ) _/Β―

Two things I want to say about this, to contribute to the conversation. When it comes to the way the copyright-part of this is organised, we definitely need a change. Due to the system of national organisations, the system is not aligned with our globalised world and it's kept like it is for big media organisations to make lots of money, not to protect the rights of the creators/artists. There. Secondly, I think at one point there was this scientific publication website that allowed researchers to publish to the public domain. A few decades ago. There are scientists who want to bypass the old system, and I can totally see how blockchain can help them do that. Imagine a contract that reveals the research only if certain credential holders (onchain) have peer-reviewed and green-lit the publication. Credentials of scientific standing can be stored onchain, for that as well. You can maybe also organise usage of it, selling the right to cite, or commercialise as an NFT. Come to think of it, there are many universities who have research that can be commercialised stored away. What if they put that onchain, and let entrepreneurs buy the rights to commercialise?
