Potentially controversial take: I don’t want to retire, ever.

I never wanna stop making things, but I would definitely give up being financially dependent on a job, and there’s a dollar amount after which I’d stop working in pursuit of more money and would work on hobby projects instead. Similar vibe or nah?

Hustle culture isn't a hot take, it's the result of a hyper capitalist environment where you've been taught since birth to define yourself by your productivity. You aren't asked what you want /to do/, you're asked what you want /to be/. Your unenriched identity is wholly built around completing job tasks for profit.

If it makes you happy then have it at. I’d imagine a day comes where you want to focus on all of your outside of work goals but maybe you already feel accomplished with those today.

I think the concept of retirement (like so many things) has become distorted. There’s the buy a house in Florida and waste away in Margaritaville sense of retirement, and that deserves its reproach. But there’s also a Michel de Montaigne retirement, where you step back into a more reflective mode.

Father of an old friend of the family retired by moving out into the country and building furniture in his barn workshop and selling it at cost for the rest of his life. That always seemed like the dream to me.

The entire concept of retirement seems somewhat dated and less clear than it did to our grandparent’s generation. Some use retire as a proxy for not having to consider compensation when deciding what to build/create or do with their time

To me: Retirement = being able to do whatever you want, whenever. Doesn’t stop you from doing projects you like, or making money for that matter. Retirement <> letting go of responsibilities

Perhaps a controversial take maybe: With my current job, I definitely want to retire, but if I eventually find a job I love, I might reconsider.
