Physical art, but with a 1-of-1 NFT. So you buy the painting and the proof together.

In the golden age of NFTs it was the typical case atudy and many artists made it happen like Beeple. Other projects also tried to implement it as an industry standard. I do not know the current status of this connection or also called digital twin.

At IYK we've been doing this since 2021 with Tyler Hobbs and more: The NFT acts as a forever proxy of physical ownership!

Or… a fully onchain NFT project with a physical derivative that comes with a NFT: https://x.com/i____felix____i/status/1947209340554776772?s=46&t=l69bNGXsI5r6Rw7Uj5ZPLQ

Tried doing this with candles and art but unfortunately the incentives were misaligned. People either 1. Buy for the NFT and want to speculate on the price of it going up or 2. Buy to enjoy the candle irl and ignore the NFT.

How is that proof maintained over any given period of time. What prevents reselling of one over the other? Would a 3rd-party escrow/custodial service always be necessary for something as this to work?

That's THE way. Splitting a painting into 100+ NFT pieces is inherently a way to profit from retail.

NFT working as a registry or proof of ownership makes much more sense than the utilising them for trading the physical art. If you purchase the artwork IRL then just get its NFT (proof of ownership) just like you do with other assets. Not sure why many tried to create the whole narrative of trading physical art/goods using NFTs.
