How do you cope with the end of a training block after a key race? Do you take time to recover and gradually build back up, or do you lock in your next race and immediately start another build to compound your fitness gains toward a new PR?

it depends on the distance. for short distance (till HM) you can lock in for another PR, for longer distance (marathon and ultra) I would suggest to recover properly.

I’ve been pretty locked into these 50Ks lately and trying to gauge how my body recovers. I gave myself six weeks between a 42K and a 50K, and I think I’ll need take a longer break next time… easier said than done.
