We cut the oak for these shelves, sealed them, and I installed them today. Also DIYed a very ugly but efficient hidden outlet lol

Very stoked on tonight’s progress towards the mini mill upgrade.
Got the ball screw and head bracket attached to the back of the pillar. Alignment turned out to be easier than I imagined. Just 4 more holes to drill and tap into the head and I’m on to electronics.

Got some important holes to make tomorrow.
Need to drill and tap 4 M6 threaded holes for mounting my ball screw along the Z axis on my mini mill.
I noticed after studying reference drawings and YouTube screenshots that folks usually mount the motor drive movement on the side of the machine. I now realize, that way you only need to align along one dimension but I can’t resist the cleaner back location. Seems also like a centered action might pull the head more evenly like the original rack & pinion and makes supporting on both sides simpler but makes the alignment harder to nail. Faking my way through engineering this as usual. I can always drill more holes later.

Chat, before I cut, this will be as straightforward as I expect, right?

Had trouble getting a lathe so I pivoted to motorizing the mini mill. Makes no damn sense smh.

Great news, everyone. Like many of you, I’ve been saving leftover plumbing parts for years. Today, I was able to make use of a compression ring setup I’ve had since I last replaced a bathroom faucet.

I have a solid lead on a used lathe but the seller absolutely sucks at communication and is over an hour away. Had it all planned for today but it fell through when they went radio silent. Trying again on Tuesday 🙏

Finished my first decent turned part on this janky mini mill setup. The first attempt was garbage so I didn’t finish it, but the second go around I was able to get better concentricity and finish. Not easy on the mill! Nice usable prototype here, but I’m looking into having some of these made for me to get a finer result. It’s a M5 stem boss meant to be split by a slot cut after welding on and tightened with a captured bolt to clamp the steerer.

A great lesson, and a few good stories from an OG.
