Big quantum breakthrough + secrecy fail:
Google found a huge 10x speedup to break Bitcoin/Ethereum signatures, but hid the details with a secret "zero-knowledge proof" after talking to the US government.
A French researcher quickly rediscovered it anyway, and a public challenge has already improved it further (plus new tech needs only ~10,000 qubits)
Timeline warning + Ethereum plan:
Justin Drake now says there's a 50% chance quantum computers break today's crypto by 2032 (10% by 2030).
He wants Ethereum to switch to unbreakable "hash-based" crypto by 2029 and is offering two $1 million prizes to speed it up.

This mind-boggling number exceeds known timescales in physics and vastly exceeds the age of the universe. It lends credence to the notion that quantum computation occurs in many parallel universes, in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse, a prediction first made by David Deutsch.
