The news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 reached me while I was visiting family in Germany. A frozen state of shock struck me. Two days later, still trying to process the emotional weight of it all, I took a portrait of Michaela and her daughter Idana in the middle of a German forest.
Michaela, an avid hiker, had told me about an old, abandoned WWII bunker hidden among the trees. It felt like the right place - heavy with memory, quiet, and almost haunted. Nothing needed to be explained. The fear, the protectiveness, the aching tenderness between a mother and her child, it was all there as Michaela instinctively wrapped her arms around her adolescent daughter. They stood together in that cold, silent forest, surrounded by echoes of a past war while sensing the stirrings of another.
