This was a thought-provoking piece and there’s a lot to digest in here. I’ll admit that I had to be patient with it. The framing of experts is more favorable (especially in comparison with the elites) than I think is warranted. I don’t necessarily disagree with it all, it’s just incomplete. Left out is that expertise tends to be deep and narrow. It can be hard for experts to weigh systematic impacts outside their domain with more familiar factors. Fauci is the most obvious recent example. Above all, I appreciate the proliferation of the “which game are you playing?” frame. As popular as it’s getting, it’s still an under appreciated way to look at the world. https://open.substack.com/pub/robkhenderson/p/experts-and-elites-play-fundamentally

“People are afraid to speak honestly,” said a doctor who immigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union. “It’s like back to the USSR, where you could only speak to the ones you trust.” If the authorities found out, you could lose your job, your status, you could go to jail or worse. The fear here is not dissimilar. https://open.substack.com/pub/bariweiss/p/what-happens-when-doctors-cant-speak?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=d4voy
