The more headlines I read like this, the more I feel justified in my “contrarian” decision to drop out in 2021 and double down on my side-project / hackathon experience as a signal for employability. University-level computer science programs in particular have become so woefully outdated, under-resourced and downright extortive compared to what you can find for free online. I think the very premise of higher education needs to be entirely rethought.

i've taught sociology, strategy, research methods (UG, masters, PhD, and exec ed) since 2008 in the US, EU, UK, Asia. in every place i've taught, education seems to be in dire straits. i wrote about what the future of education should be here: https://vaughntan.org/meaningedu tl;dr: AI tools are increasingly accessible, cheap, and seem potentially able to produce any output a human can produce — they’ll certainly reconfigure what work looks like. I agree with this read on AI, except for one important difference: Humans can and must do what I call “meaning-making” because AI can’t do it yet. Meaning-making consists of making subjective judgments about the relative value of things. Education at all levels, but especially higher education, has largely abandoned teaching students how to make and justify subjective value judgments. To remain relevant, education must reorient around helping students learn what meaning-making is, and how to do it well.

“as a single file please” 😱 Goodness, my college experience would have been 1000x better if the professors and administrators actually TESTED their learning management systems from the perspective of a STUDENT. In 2019 my English professor insisted on having an entire month’s worth of work turned in as a single PDF file on Canvas. I spent half the day cooked up in my dorm figuring out how to consolidate dozens of text files, pages from previously-exported PDFs, and phone pictures of peer-reviewed printouts and handwritten notes she had us take in class. (Of course, she also assigned a 24-hour take-home essay to be due the same day 😑) You can imagine this got worse as classes went fully remote the next year during COVID. The more dogmatic or technophobic the instructor, the more of a full-time IT kung fu-ninja we students effectively had to become to successfully navigate the obtuse grading systems they set up. And as a computer science student I already had way too much screen time 😵‍💫
